A German officer looks on as the wife of a hanged man kisses her husband's hand


The woman, whose body is hanging in the middle of the group, owned a restaurant under which the Germans found a tunnel that led to the cemetery and was the suspected escape route for the sniper.

On the back of the photograph, there is a caption in German handwriting: "The wife of a hanged man kisses her husband's hand. In the background, our technical superior inspector." Captions on the back of photographs, such as this one, taken by a German military photographer attached to a propaganda unit, were usually supplied by the photographer himself.

Event HistoryThe action was carried out on orders from the city commander, Lieutenant Colonel von Bandelow, in reprisal for the killing of 4 German soldiers by civilians on 18 April 1941. Altogether 22 civilians were hanged in the cemetery, while 18 more were publicly shot against the cemetery wall by troops with the "Grossdeutschland" regiment

After surviving the Andersonville Prison Camp, this is what a union soldier looked like. Andersonville Prison was a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp. Andersonville Prison, also known as Camp Sumter, was a Confederate military prison during the American Civil War. The prison was opened in February 1864 near Andersonville, Georgia, and originally covered roughly 16.5 acres of land1. By June of the same year, the prison had expanded to 26.5 acres. The prison was rectangular in shape and had a 15-foot-tall stockade around the grounds. The commandant was Captain Henry Wirz, who was accused and tried for war crimes following the war and hanged for his crimes. He was hanged upside-down with dick cut off. The population inside Andersonville Prison’s walls in April 1864 was 7,160. By the end of August the same year, the population had risen to 31,693. BANGKOK — For about an hour on Wednesday, the website of Myanmar National Television carried a surprising report: A mass prisoner amnesty the previous day, it said, had included seven members of the country’s military who were briefly jailed for a massacre of Rohingya Muslims. Mohamed Abukar Ibrahim, 48, was stoned to death by militants from the Hizb Al-Islam group in Afgoye, district Somalia, in 2009 Stoning is a form of execution by torture where the individual who throws the deadly stone cannot be identified. In some countries, those sentenced to stoning, or “lapidation” as it is also called, are buried in a hole and covered with soil (men up to their waists; women to a line above their breasts), according to Article 102 of the Islamic Penal Code. A selected group then executes the alleged adulterers using rocks and sticks. Those able to escape the hole during stoning can be freed, according to Islamic law, a feat that is much more difficult for women than for men because so much more of their body is covered during lapidation.
