A four-star general’s personal photos of the battlefields of France and Germany from World War II are being published for the first time, shedding new light on the bloodshed and violence that darkened Europe during the Nazi era.

General Charles Day Palmer spent most of the war fighting on the Western Front, and took photos of the bombed-out cities and lifeless bodies he witnessed along his European march.





After sitting in his personal files for years, the photos were shared for the first time by his grandson Daniel Palmer earlier this month, on the website Argunners.com. See the photos after the caught:

Afuna, Japan. 1945. A group of Australian War Correspondents visited a prisoner of war (POW) camp and found shocking conditions of cruelty. The camp was about fifteen miles out of Yokosuka Naval Base, and the Corespondents were the first to find the POWs. The camp was not registered (with the International Red Cross) and all the 103 occupants, comprising ninety eight Americans, four British and one New Zealander, were reported dead some time ago.  The men had been cruelly beaten and maltreated, but for the past week or two they had better treatment and were given a chance to pick up. American planes had dropped comforts and clothing to them. The Japanese guards who had beaten the men were taken from the camp and replaced by others a week before the occupation. The naked machine gunner hero, during the Second World War, an American pilot was shot down by Japanese anti-aircraft and ended up in the sea near the port of Rabaul. He did not die but was seriously injured. He managed to send out a distress call, which was heard by the US Navy's "Dumbo" rescue unit. The rescue unit's machine gunner didn't think twice. He took off the clothes that would have prevented him from swimming, dived into the water and brought the pilot to safety. Immediately afterwards, still naked, he stood in his position to respond to the fire of the Japanese who were trying to prevent the seaplane from regaining altitude. The photo was taken by Horace Bristol, an American war photographer. His photos have appeared in Time, Fortune, Sunset, National Geographic and Life magazines. The name of the hero machine gunner remains unknown to this day
