Public Execution at Bar- Beach, Lagos (Victoria Island)


It was no laughing matter in Lagos when eight Nigerian robbers were executed; but this one made light of the situation as a priest prayed for him seconds before he faced the firing squad. 


About 30,000 people watched the Executions, bring the number to 70 people who have been executed since the death penalty for armed robbery was introduced in January last year. Date: 9th September, 1971.

Andersonville Prison, also known as Camp Sumter, was a Confederate military prison during the American Civil War. The prison was opened in February 1864 near Andersonville, Georgia, and originally covered roughly 16.5 acres of land1. By June of the same year, the prison had expanded to 26.5 acres. The prison was rectangular in shape and had a 15-foot-tall stockade around the grounds. The commandant was Captain Henry Wirz, who was accused and tried for war crimes following the war and hanged for his crimes. He was hanged upside-down with dick cut off. The population inside Andersonville Prison’s walls in April 1864 was 7,160. By the end of August the same year, the population had risen to 31,693. BANGKOK — For about an hour on Wednesday, the website of Myanmar National Television carried a surprising report: A mass prisoner amnesty the previous day, it said, had included seven members of the country’s military who were briefly jailed for a massacre of Rohingya Muslims. The report was quickly taken down and was strongly denied by a government spokesman, U Zaw Htay. “It’s not true, it’s false news,” he said. “They are still in prison.” The jailing of the seven, three officers and four soldiers, was announced only on April 10, a rare admission of guilt by armed forces accused by the international community of unleashing a scorched-earth campaign in northern Rakhine State last year that compelled around 700,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist country, for Bangladesh. In some countries, those sentenced to stoning, or “lapidation” as it is also called, are buried in a hole and covered with soil (men up to their waists; women to a line above their breasts), according to Article 102 of the Islamic Penal Code. A selected group then executes the alleged adulterers using rocks and sticks.
