A German woman facing public humiliation because of a romantic affair with a Polish man, 1942

German racial laws were strictly enforced and sexual relationships between Germans and Poles were illegal. The Nazis issued the Polish decrees on 8 March 1940 which regulated the working and living conditions of Polish laborers (Zivilarbeiter) used during World War II in Germany.

The decrees set out that any Pole “who has sexual relations with a German man or woman, or approaches them in any other improper manner, will be punished by death”. The Gestapo was extremely vigilant about sexual relations between Germans and Poles and pursued any case relentlessly where this was suspected.


Persons suspected of having sexual relations with non-Aryans were charged with Rassenschande(racial defilement) and tried in the regular courts. Evidence provided to the Gestapo for such cases was largely provided by ordinary citizens such as neighbors, co-workers, or other informants. P

ersons accused of race defilement were publicly humiliated by being paraded through the streets with a placard around their necks detailing their crime. Those convicted were typically sentenced to prison terms, and (subsequent to 8 March 1938) upon completing their sentences were re-arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Nazi concentration camps.


As the law did not permit capital punishment for racial defilement, special courts were convened to allow the death penalty for some cases. According to an article in Der Spiegel, between 1936 and 1943 the Nazis accused 1,580 persons of race defilement with 429 of them being convicted.

In 2018, 6-month-old Jaxon Hunter died in 2018 at a daycare after a 10-year-old girl allegedly dropped him.  The girl told authorities she panicked after dropping Jaxon, and then she began stomping on his head when he began to cry. Initially, the girl faced charges of first-degree intentional homicide, as per the guidelines for individuals aged 10 or older, and was placed in a secure detention center.  Subsequently, the case was transferred from adult court to juvenile court and results of future rulings were not made public. The mother of the accused girl came forward in defense of her daughter, stating that the incident was an accident. She expressed her belief in her daughter's innocence and stated that the incident was not intentional. Mohamed Abukar Ibrahim, 48, was stoned to death by militants from the Hizb Al-Islam group in Afgoye, district Somalia, in 2009 Stoning is a form of execution by torture where the individual who throws the deadly stone cannot be identified. In some countries, those sentenced to stoning, or “lapidation” as it is also called, are buried in a hole and covered with soil (men up to their waists; women to a line above their breasts), according to Article 102 of the Islamic Penal Code. A selected group then executes the alleged adulterers using rocks and sticks.
