On August 31, 1985, serial killer Richard Ramirez walked into a convenience store in Los Angeles.

By that point, he had murdered at least 14 people across California — and he still thought he could pass for an ordinary shopper. But then, he noticed his face on the front page of a newspaper and ran for his life.

Unbeknownst to him, the authorities had just released his name and photo to the public while he was traveling back to the city.

This gave residents plenty of time to memorize his features and easily recognize him on the street. Before long, an angry mob caught up to him — and beat him so relentlessly that he thanked the police officers who arrested him.

Serial killer Richard Ramirez leaves the courthouse after being sentenced to die in California's gas chamber.
